Driving directions:Driving down the road no 3 from Legnica in the direction of Jelenia Góra, at the end of Legnica you have to turn right for Warmątowice. After arriving at the village you have to follow the main road and a palace will be visible directly opposite at the tight turn of the main road to the left.
Historical outline:The beginnings of the building in Warmątowice vanish in the dark of history. In the middle ages the castle or a defensive manor existed at that place, which was thoroughly converted in 1602 by Wenzeslaus von Zedlitz into a renaissance mansion. In the following centuries the building was changing its hands, and in the XVIIIth cent. waited till the next serious reconstruction. In 1812 a village along with the palace were bought by Ludwik Serafin von Olszewski, a germanized Pole serving in the Prussian army. His grandson Alfred, who inherited property, was so charmed by the novels of Sienkiewicz, and a Trilogy in particular, that he determined to return to the polish roots. He started by giving its children polish names, and in the last will conditioned that if children do not have a good command of polish language and do not respect polish traditions, the estate is supposed to be the property of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The children did not fulfill the last will of their father, and Sienkiewicz did not accept the bequest. Finally the palace landed in hands of Alfred’s daughter, Draga.
The family of Von Olszewski were the owners of the estate till the World War II, in the time of which it was destroyed. Till the 60’s of the XXth cent. the palace was resided by random persons, and then abandoned. Since 1995 the building is the private property.
