Driving directions:Driving from Gorzów Wielkopolski down the road no 3 towards Zielona Góra you cross Międzyrzecz. There you ought to turn left towards the city center, into the old road no 3. After you arrive in the center you must turn right into the road no 137 to Słubice, and then follow the signposts leading to the museum. There exactly is the castle.
Historical outline:The castle in Międzyrzecz arose in the place of the older, wooden-earth borough, which in the times of the first Piasts was one of the Polish most important strongholds. It is suspected that already in the XIIIth cent. the borough possessed the brick tower, while a stone castle was constructed in the XIVth cent. on the initiative of Kazimierz Wielki. For the sake of its crucial role of defense of the Greater Poland lands, the castle was converted repeatedly and fortified. After the destructions from 1520 the stronghold was rebuilt and adjusted to artillery defense. It was exactly then when two cylindrical bastilles were built, which presently give the castle its characteristic shape. In the XVIIth cent. the wars with the Swedes destroyed the castle so much that it could not be rescued any more, in spite of an attempt of the reconstruction from the end of the century. At the start of the XVIIIth cent. next to the stronghold, on the castle’s side emerged a new building, where is located a museum currently.
