Driving directions:Driving down the road no 2 to Koło from Kłodawa you need to drive through Koło and past Warta turn right towards... Koło :-) This is Bogumiła St., along which you ought to drive straight ahead all the time. On the junction on the bridge you need to drive straight ahead into Zamkowa St. (the main road runs from the left to the right). Zamkowa Street promptly turns into the dirt road, down which along bulwarks you need to cover about 2 km, to reach the ruins of the castle.
Historical outline:The castle in Koło arose on Great Casimir’s initiative, which Jan Długosz verifies in his chronicles. A very rare feature of the castle was that it made the independent defensive foundation, and was not linked with the town like some other castles, which were being located in 1362. The peak of splendor fell on the XVth cent. when the nobility congresses were arranged in it and the kings visited there. In the second half of the XVIth cent. the castle diminished in its importance, and its slow death began from destructions during the invasion of the Swedes. In the years of 1696-1763 the foundation was Benedictines’ property who began the demolition of the castle. At the end of the XVIIIth cent. the stronghold was already the ruin, whereas further demolitions in the XIXth cent. as well as Warta’s effects caused that till the present times only the part of the castle preserved.
Archaeological explorations from 1976 revealed the foundations of the building in the castle area, which can prove that the castle emerged already in Władysław Łokietek’s time.
