Janowice Wielkie - Bolczów Castle

Parking:		The castle is on the hill, so in its vicinity there is no parking lot, but there is not at the foot of the hill too
Searching difficulty:		Finding the castle is not the easiest, but a couple of things help: locals, the name of the street - Zamkowa and the one and only signpost
Access difficulty:		As to reach the castle you need to climb up the high hill, but the climb is moderately gentle. The climb takes about 30 minutes.

Driving directions:

You need to make for Wrocław from Jelenia Góra down the road no 3 and in Radomierz turn right towards Janowice Wielkie. In the town you should drive down the main road all the way to the level crossing and past it turn right (there is the only signpost leading up to the castle). After covering about 400 m you ought to turn left into the wide tree-lined avenue, sett-paved (there are already markings of the green trail, which you need to follow as far as the castle). Drive to the very end of the paved avenue, and then cross the main road directly opposite and enter into Zamkowa Street. Drive straight down it all the way to the end of the asphalt, park there (there is room for 2 cars) and follow the green trail to the castle through the forest.


Historical outline:

The former name: Janowitz, Bolzenschloss castle

Historians assume that the castle was built before 1375 by the chamberlain Mikołaj Bolcze. During Hussite wars the castle was destroyed in 1433 by the burghers of Świdnica. However, it was quickly rebuilt, and the splendor it gained thanks to works begun in the years of 1517-1518 by Hans Dippold von Burghaus. Within the following century the castle was changing its hands, and in 1645 it was seized and burnt by the Swedes. Since then the building has not been resided.
At the beginning of the XXth century on the upper castle arose the hostel, which did not, however, survive The World War II. Since then the castle has stayed in ruin, which was secured in 1965.
